I've been on a French kick the last couple months, trying to find the best Croque Madames and sweets in Berlin. For French pastry this Prenzlauerberg cafe-patisserie offers the best yet.
Le Gapias is simple; it showcases pastry, quiche and sandwiches in their vitrines; no prepared breakfasts. If you come for lunch the choices may be somewhat limited, like quiche & salad, or a baguette sandwich. For breakfast you can have a croissant with a hot drink, but no butter and jam; just the croissant. Or another pastry!
The croissants, along with the other pastries, are delicieux. The layers are flaky, buttery and separated. The almondines croissants have just the right contrast between the sweet filling and the savory croissant. The lemon tart has bits of lemon throughout the filling, not just a thin lemon slice on top.
Some French goods are available for purchase, wine and cremant, but also chocolates, salt, flavored butter spreads, teas, and salicorne/samphire, an herb made from saltwort that goes with fish or vegetables. The owner says they focus on the Atlantic coast.
This place is the real deal. En plus, the chairs remind me of the cafe chairs in Paris.
I like that cake so much and the coffee imported from France. Just great. The typical French cakes and coffee! High quality coffee set and cutlery and quiches for the afternoon.
